Cotton from our Quacking Aspen

Asked May 23, 2019, 4:40 PM EDT

We have had a Quacking Aspen for over 10 years growing in our yard. Not once has it ever dropped cotton in the Spring. Does anyone know why after 10 plus years it would now drop cotton? Is it a mature tree thing or could it be the winter/spring we are having? Will it continue for future years?

It is likely just dropping the spent flowers, which are like catkins (pussy willows for example), and when they are done, they dry up and drop, like cotton. It could well be that your tree has just gotten to the point of flowering or there may have been different weather conditions in previous springs that blew the "cotton" away without you being aware of it.
