Topping a 60 ft. white pine

Asked May 23, 2019, 4:11 PM EDT

Would topping a 60 ft. white pine by 1/3 severly compromise the tree? If it could be safely topped, how much could one concievably top it. I understand and accept the fact that this is an educated opinion without benefit of seeing the tree.

Topping a conifer (less than 25%) will not kill it outright, but it will stress the tree and cause it to push out several lateral shoots that will compete for dominance. The resulting appearance of the tree may not be to your liking. Taking more than 25% off the top of the tree will stress it to the point where it will most likely be invaded by pests or pathogens and eventually die.
