bearded irises

Asked May 23, 2019, 2:48 PM EDT

WE have had bearded irises for nearly 4 years. This year they hardly bloomed. A gardening book indicated that they can be separated in the summer. Can I go ahead with this now? Thank you.

Since your bearded irises have not bloomed well, check to see if there is any evidence of damage to the rhizomes. Iris borers can be problematic in these plants. Here is information about what to look for. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/iris-borer-flowers

Lack of flowering may also be due to overcrowding. The recommended time to divide and transplant bearded irises in this area is June-July. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/dividing-iris
