Pin Oak Problem?

Asked May 22, 2019, 1:02 PM EDT

A number of small, end branches on our Pin Oak are bare, while leaves have populated most of the rest of the tree. There are also light green spots (dime- to -quarter sized) on the trunk. Is there an infection or disease affecting our tree?

Hi. Thank you for your question. Without a photo to see what you are describing, by best guess is you have Lichen on the tree. If they are lichen, they are actually a sign of good air quality. Here is a link to a great fact sheet and video explaining what lichen are and how they function. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/lichens
Again I would need more information or photo to address the bare branches. If you could attach a photo, we could try to give a more definitive answer.
