Can you tell me what is wrong with my small maple tree?

Hi, The local nursery thought it might be a fungus and suggested fertilizing it. I am not sure what is wrong and worry I might make things worse. It is a small maple tree. The roots do not look like they are chocking the tree and I do not see any insects.

I am sorry to tell you that it is unlikely that you tree will be able to survive. When a tree loses more than half of its canopy in a single season the tree usually dies.
