Chard Under Attack

Asked May 21, 2019, 3:37 PM EDT

Our chard starts are getting munched and I have not seen any snails or slug culprits. Any ideas? We prefer natural or organic solutions but don’t know where to start. There are some tiny white specks on the back of some of the damaged leaves. Eventually the leaves are munched until only the stem is left, and the ones closest to the side of the planter box are eaten first.Thank you!!

Well it sure does looks and acts like and like slug and or snail damage. They inhabit and attack from the edges between and under the rails and sideboards where they live during the day coming out at night to feed. You can see them and use salt on them at night as one treatment method.

Above is a very comprehensive OSU Extension article about identification, management and control including a thorough discussion of the various pesticide choices.
