Did my Maple Tree Die

Asked May 21, 2019, 10:50 AM EDT

Last year my tree seemed perfect. Beautiful fall colors. This year it started with buds and just stopped. No leaves at all. Is it dead? That fast

Unfortunately, your tree looks dead. There may be several reasons for the decline. Factors like poor drainage, excessive moisture, poor soils, girdling roots, planting too deeply, excessive mulch, etc. can all contribute to root injury and dieback.

Scratch the branches with your fingernail and look for green tissue. If you see it, there may be some viability. If you see brown, then the branch is dead.
Looks like you will have to replace the tree. See our publication and page for more information on the above and when to decide to remove a tree.
