Asked May 20, 2019, 11:27 PM EDT

Haha I had to it it down to kill it. I want to plant an American redbud it Dogwood 3 feet from the remaining trunk. Will the new tree prosper under otherwise good conditions? Or remaining Killer black walnut will kill it?

Thank you for your question. First, this is a WSU Extension article on the science behind walnut tree toxicity: http://cru.cahe.wsu.edu/CEPublications/FS325E/FS325E.pdf Second: here is a full list of plants that can be planted near existing walnut trees, or soils that previously contained them: http://stage.mortonarb.org/trees-plants/tree-and-plant-advice/horticulture-care/plants-tolerant-black-walnut-toxicity Hope this is helpful. Good luck!
