berries disappeared from lemon lace elderberry

Asked May 20, 2019, 5:35 PM EDT

Earlier in the spring, there were so many flowers on my 3 or 4 year old Lemon Lace elderberry, I thought I would get some actual berries this year. Just now I checked it and it looks like the stems after someone ate all the grapes. Minimal berries left. Would you know what's going on?

Thank you for the question. Elderberry shrubs are often planted as a food supply for songbirds. If you had blooms that produced berries which are now gone, I can only imagine that the birds had an early treat. Due to the unseasonably cold weather this spring, the birds have had a tough time finding enough to eat. The unripe berries may have filled the void.
