Unidentifiable lawn weed

Asked May 20, 2019, 12:34 PM EDT

Greetings experts: Attached is an image of a lawn weed that just surfaced in my backyard this spring. In this very same place last year was untreated stiltgrass. Can you identify this current weed and/or recommend an eradication strategy? Thank you.

This looks like speedwell-veronica which can have bluish or whitish flowers. There are annual and perennial species of speedwell. We have been getting many reports of this weed.

To reduce the ability of speedwell to get established, thicken up (overseed) your lawn in the early fall if it has gotten thin. The best time to fertilize is in the fall. See our website for management in lawns http://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/speedwell-veronica
