Taunton Spreading Yew

Asked May 17, 2019, 7:17 AM EDT

Why are some of the yews I planted last spring/summer turning brown/yellow? They are all planted in the same area and were watered until winter. I am sending an example of 2 yews that are browning and 1 healthy one.

Ramsey County Minnesota yew dieback winter injury on yews

It takes a while for newly planted trees and shrubs to recover and begin growing normally. The added stress of very low winter temperatures may have taken a toll on the yews too.

Most reliable garden centers and nurseries guarantee their stock for at least one growing season. Although some of the transplants that look unhealthy may recover, this would be a good time to take photos and discuss their prospects with the person or company that sold them.

Some stems on the plant in the photo on the right appear to be bare. This condition is often the result of deer or rodent damage. If that's possible, barriers or repellents will be needed to protect the plants.
