Sourwood sapling sliced

Is this animal damage and if so what animal would be suspect? I would have expected animal damage to have consumed some of the plant.... Grew up in Michigan but now live in Huntsville Alabama :-)

Unless you have angry neighbors, no telling what critters you may have in Alabama that could have done the job. Rabbits have extremely sharp teeth and can make clean cuts that make the object look like it was pruned mechanically. Otherwise, read more here: https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/identifying_critter_damage_in_the_garden_and_landscape

Good luck!
