Lilac bush needs rescue

Asked May 15, 2019, 6:29 AM EDT

Hello, Is there any hope for my lilac bush which was a Mother’s Day gift for my wife three years ago? This winter the deer grazed off most of the buds and there is a fair amount of dead growth. I would welcome and am grateful for any suggestions. Thank you

Lilacs are typically pretty resilient. They do require well-drained soil and prefer full sun. You must have pretty severe deer pressure because it is not one of their most favorite shrubs. At this point, prune out all of the dead or damaged stems down to any new growth. Next fall, protect the shrub from the deer damage by installing a cage or barrier around the shrub or using deer netting.

Thank you Deb for the advice. I’ll get to work and see if I can save this plant.
