Leaf curl

Asked May 13, 2019, 6:53 PM EDT

About 3 years ago we planted a semi-dwarf cherry tree with three varieties grafted..A few days ago we noticed most of the tree's leaves were.curled up in to dark rusty mass. See attached. Reading discussions on the internet suggests the tree is affected by fungus. Is there any thing I an do ti save the tree?; Thank you Norm Nelson

Oh no!
Are you noticing any other symptoms besides the leaves drying in the mass? In your photo, I see one branch with what looks to be a canker (a sunken area on the branch). Are you seeing other areas like this on the branches, trunk or crown area where the trunk meets the ground)? Any holes in the branches? Do these plants receive water in the summer month? If so, how have they been watered? How was the planting hole prepared? How did the tree look last year?

It might be easiest to continue this diagnosis using the Master Gardener volunteers in the Benton County office. They can look at additional photos and any samples that you're able to drop off. Contact info can be found here: https://extension.oregonstate.edu/mg/linn-benton/have-gardening-question
