Problems with Voles.

Asked May 13, 2019, 5:06 PM EDT

We have a vole problem, here on our 2 acres. There are so many holes and trails I worry about our yard becoming a giant sinkhole! I’ve heard moth balls down the holes might do the trick, what do you think?

Hi,

Thanks for reaching out about the large population of voles at your site. There is no research supporting the use of mothballs for deterring voles. Off-label uses of pesticides, even common household products, are not safe or lawful. However, there are many other ways that you can reduce their numbers by making habitat less welcoming and by killing them.

Here are directions for how to identify damage from voles and other common rodents, and how to control them: https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/pnw627

You might also want to consider adding habitat for birds of prey to your site. While they won't eliminate your rodent population, they can help: https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/ec1641

I hope that helps, and please reach out if we can assist further.
