Rosa rugosa

Asked May 12, 2019, 3:49 PM EDT

Yesterday GVEA was giving away bare root plantings of Rosa rugosa. The literature they provided clearly stated that the plant is invasive and will compete with wild roses. I am wondering about this species and our wild Alaska rose, Rosa acicularis. Is rugosa a potential problem here in interior AK?

Rosa rugosa will certainly spread by its roots and is aggressive. We have some in the Anchorage area that may have spread by seed, but it is unclear as those couple of spots aren't expanding much. Rosa rugosa could be invasive here, but it is such a common ornamental planted all over that it may not. Sorry for a very unclear response. This is one of the few species where that is a big question right now.
