Shade tolerant sod

Asked May 10, 2019, 3:50 PM EDT

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time for this. I live in Minnetonka in a yard with a lot of shade. I would like to know what is the most shade-tolerant sod available in Minnesota, and where can I buy it? I had an estimate today, and was told that my yard would need shade-tolerant sod and that the best is only available from one grower in Minnesota, and is not ready until July.

Hi,
I would suggest that you consider seeding as offering you more flexibility and lower cost than sod.

Most experts are now suggesting fescue for shady lawns.

Other ground covers like Vinca do well depending on the light and shade patterns. You can plant different ground covers for different light environments in your yard. https://www.beelab.umn.edu/wild-bees/wild-bees-flowers/beelawn

Here are some places that might help.

What ever you plant, it will do better with a higher mower height which enables deeper roots.
I hope this helps. Write back if you have more questions.
