Struggling Madrone

Asked May 10, 2019, 2:13 PM EDT

We have a Madrone tree that's not looking so great. I have attached photos. Is it a canker situation? What can we do? It's a beautiful tree in a prominent area on our property. Thanks so much for any help you can provide! Best, Erica Meyer Stafford Area, Clackamas Co.

Madrone in our area do suffer from a variety of leaf blights, root diseases, and other issues. If these photos are current (May 2019), then indeed your tree is struggling since madrone usually look their best this time of year with new leaves. One thing that we have found is that madrone do not do well with too much irrigation and fertilization in a garden situation. Here is a fact sheet on diseases and insects of madrone https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/ec1619

Also, researchers at Washington State University have been focusing on madrone health and they are offering a webinar on Life and Death of Madrone in PNW Forests later this month http://forestry.wsu.edu/nps/events/webinars/ Also see their madrone webpage at https://ppo.puyallup.wsu.edu/pmr/
