Persimmon bark problem

Hi - could you identify what's affecting these young persimmon trunks and let me know if you have any suggestions for how to help the tree? See attached picture. Thanks!

It looks like there was some type of physical injury to the trunk when the tree was young. There is nothing we can recommend for this type of wound. A portion of the cambium layer is damaged, so there will probably be dieback in the canopy of the tree. That said, sometimes fruit trees can continue to grow for a period of time and even bear fruit. If you see healthy growth in the leaf canopy, there is some hope. If it is not developing a healthy canopy of new foliage, I recommend replacement.
