Is it mites?

Asked April 30, 2019, 7:30 AM EDT

Something is making a mess of our China girl hollies, Foster hollies and burning bushes. There are crushed dead leaves in a kind of web, mainly around the lower branches. The pictures are of one holly bush, a cluster that I pulled off and put on the driveway, and a tiny reddish bug/spider that crawled out of the mess onto a piece of paper. How can I get rid of this?

This does appear to be a mite, most likely a type of false spider mite. This mite would not have created the webbing you are seeing but will be using it as a home. I would recommend a product such as Talstar (bifenthrin) or insecticidal soap. Stay away from products such as Malathion as they are prone to cause mite outbreaks down the line.
