Birch stump leaking watery sap

Asked April 27, 2019, 2:37 PM EDT

We had to have a large birch tree taken down, it was too close to the house/roof. It has been leaking watery sap for 2.5 weeks. Now we have a stinky muddy mess around the stump. Help! Any suggestions?

This time of year birch roots are absorbing tons of water, and the roots of your birch are still active. This will stop.

Meanwhile, you can just absorb the excess sap by sponging it up with a dry compost product like Leafgro or any dry organic product. Pile it on, and then when the oozing stops, simply rake it off and apply it wherever your landscape can use some compost (around any tree or shrub or bed). The sap is virtually water and will not damage anything.
