Orchard Grass going to seed

Asked April 24, 2019, 9:23 PM EDT

Why does my orchard grass go to seed as soon as the weather warms. I haven’t fertilized or started irrigating yet since the Spring has been wet.

Crook County Oregon lawns and turf

Generally grass plants will speed up going from vegetative growth to seed production as they get drought stressed. It is amazing how fast grass plants will take up the available moisture. You might use a probe or shovel to put in the soil and how much moisture is in the soil. If it is Orchardgrass it must be under stress. I would not expect seed heads to be appearing until many weeks later. Are you sure it is orchardgrass? You might bring a whole plant by the Crook County Extension office to be ID'ed.
