Are my asparagus safe to eat?

Asked April 24, 2019, 12:44 AM EDT

My asparagus bed was flooded in the March storm. It was under water for two days with flood water from Rattlesnake Creek in Pleasant Hill, Oregon. I assume the flood waters were contaminated by many things, including septic drain fields and farm animal pasture runoff. Will I be able to safely harvest any of my asparagus this year? It seems unlikely.

You should be ok to harvest your asparagus and consume them. Wash them thoroughly and cook them completely through and you should be ok. The bacteria from the flood water that could be on your asparagus will be destroyed by heating. I would not eat them raw.
