Native dogwood with bark splitting

Otherwise a healthy native dogwood but this year the bark is splitting. I dont see any bugs. What can i do to save this? Thanks

The bark is peeling and there is no control for that. This looks like old damage possibly from cold injury, borers, etc. we cannot say for sure.

You did not mention what the canopy looks like and if there is branch dieback. All you can do is look for new growth and prune dead wood. If the tree does not put out foliage, then the tree is dead and you will have to remove. Here is our dogwood publication and When To Decide To Remove A Tree.
