Last year's new growth from spruce trees all over our yard

Asked April 20, 2019, 8:45 PM EDT

We live in Accudent, MD. We have 3 blue spruce. Our yard is covered with 2-6 inch long ends of their branches. They are not brown, they look perfectly healthy..both pieces and trees. Painful for dog to walk on, he doesn't want to go out. I rake them up, more fall. Any ideas?

We are not sure what you are dealing with. It is possible it may be squirrel damage. Please send us photos of the tree and the branches that are littered below the trees.
Send us photos of the ends of the branches so we can see if they were cleanly cut, etc.

Hi Marion,
This is the main tree that we are worried about. We planted our Christmas tree the year we moved here, 1996. It was about 6 ft. Tall when planted. The trimmed bittim has been like that for about 5 years, with no pribkem like this year ever before. We don't have allot of squirrels as we constantly have stray and feral cats around. Vet use to live here so folks still think it is a great place to dump their unwanted critters, wouldn't mind as much if I wasn't totally allergic to them! Anyway, here are the pictures.

Squirrels looks like the best possibility. Look at our webpage on squirrels: https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/squirrels It talks about the common practice of squirrels to use clippings for nests. They also will remove twigs that interfere with their favorite branch routes.
