what is this tree on my property - smooth gray bark

Asked April 20, 2019, 9:49 AM EDT

this is one of two unique trees on my property.
it has smooth gray bark and distinct flower/seed pods.
it's a wonderfully shaped tree -- nicely branched, good balance, etc.

i'd appreciate giving it a proper name -- thank you.

Prince George's County Maryland

This looks like a beautiful American hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana). These are native to Maryland. https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewSpecies.php?species=1352

Thanks again Christa!
this tree is visually appealing; it has a nice form. The one hornbeam i have has, what appears to be, a big beaver "chomp" in its trunk. Our one hornbeam survived well. I'll have to think of a name... thanks again Christa!!
