This looks like a beautiful American hornbeam (Carpinus caroliniana). These are native to Maryland. https://www.marylandbiodiversity.com/viewSpecies.php?species=1352

this tree is visually appealing; it has a nice form. The one hornbeam i have has, what appears to be, a big beaver "chomp" in its trunk. Our one hornbeam survived well. I'll have to think of a name... thanks again Christa!!
