Friend? Or Foe?

Asked April 19, 2019, 10:33 AM EDT

Found this egg case this month (mid April 2019) while pruning/removing a dying boxwood hedge in a dappled shady area of the yard, which will be full shade once the oaks are fully leafed out. What is it? I have found other brown egg cases/cocoons online, but they don’t quite match. Thank you for any help.

Congratulations! This is the cocoon of a huge moth, either polyphemus or cecropia, in the giant silk moth family.

Here they are: https://uwm.edu/field-station/giant-silk-moths-family-saturnidae/
Quite a find.
