Prevent germination

Asked April 14, 2019, 12:55 PM EDT

I have a large (20-30) foot Japanese Maple. Turns out it’s a female and spreads thousands of seedlings all over my yard. Is there anything I can do to keep them from sprouting?

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately, you can't stop plants, water and soil from creating new plants! However, if you use a pre-emergent herbicide, which acts to prevent the seeds from rooting, you may be able to keep most from sprouting, and you can mow the remainder. Just know that such an herbicide will also prevent any other plant from rooting. Here is an article about weeds (any plant you don't want in a particular area is a 'weed') that discusses maple seeds: http://www.rs.uky.edu/consumer/extension_pdfs/agr205.pdf

Hope this is helpful. Good luck!
