Reporting English Boxwood blight

Asked April 12, 2019, 12:08 AM EDT

I was told at the nursery (American Plant, Bethesda) that you are tracking boxwood blight. I have 4-6 boxwoods that have been affected by blight. I have already pulled and discarded 3 of them. Potomac MD.

We are sorry to hear about your boxwoods. This disease has become increasingly problematic in recent months and unfortunately, there is no cure for it. You are doing the correct thing by removing the boxwoods that have boxwood blight symptoms. Please refer to this fact sheet from Virginia Tech for further information on how to manage boxwood blight when it is found in a home landscape. https://www.pubs.ext.vt.edu/PPWS/PPWS-29/PPWS-29.html

We do not recommend replanting this area with boxwoods. Other plants in the Buxaceae are also susceptible to the disease. This includes sweetbox (Sarcococca sp.) and Pachysandra. Here is a recent article by our plant pathologist. https://marylandgrows.umd.edu/2019/04/01/boxwood-blight-in-maryland/
