What are these bugs?

Asked April 10, 2019, 10:45 PM EDT

We have noticed millions of these bugs flying around ONLY our yard. They are like 2-3 centimeters tall, and seem to only come out when it’s sunny. We’ve noticed a giant swarm that just floats with the breeze right by the pine trees. There are thousands covering our front porch, and front/back yard. We went next door and they have nothing. We back up to a farm, but so do our neighbors so I don’t think it’s from that. They seem to be attracted to lights as well, and we find tons of them in the house at night. They don’t bite, just SO annoying. Any clue on what these may be, how we can get rid of them, and why they’re only in our yard? They’re driving us insane, and making taking our dog outside miserable. Thanks so much!

The insect looks like a midge, a type of fly. They are harmless and are a nuisance because of their swarming pattern. They like moist areas and swarm in the sun. You may see them for several days but are not a permanent issue. As soon as it dries out they will be gone.
