This plant is growing on the grounds of Camp Magruder near Rockaway. It causes problems because the plant creates painful tiny thorns. It grows very close to the ground and has a large central root.

It is hard to identify without seeing flowers, but this may be Portulaca pilosa. This succulent in the Purslane family has pinkish purple to reddish flowers usually in the summer.

I wish it was Portulaca pilosa. Unfortunately, this plant is VERY pokie! I will keep an eye out this spring to see if it flowers, although I don't recall it having flowers.

If it does flower you could take a sample in to the Master Gardeners in Tillamook to see if they can ID it for you. Check out the Oregon State Extension Tillamook County website to see when when their Help Desk is open.
