Unidentified Weed

Asked April 7, 2019, 1:09 PM EDT

Can seem to identify or kill this weed. New to our lawns here is East Columbia. Even our expert neighbor is impacted and at a loss. He suggested contacting you all. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Howard County Maryland lawns and turf weeds

The plant in your photo looks like hairy bittercress. It is a winter annual weed that germinates in the fall. At this point, hand pulling or weeding with a tool before the seeds disperse is the best option.

Lawns that are not dense or lawns are mowed too short or are in shade allow hairy bittercress to outcompete the lawn.
