wood fire ashes -- good lawn fertilizer ?

Asked April 1, 2019, 9:15 AM EDT

I live in Stacy, where the soil is sandy. A soil test showed a serious nitrogen deficiency. This past winter, I had a big bonfire of oak branches after a serious pruning of the overhanging limbs. Now I have a mound of ashes. Would these ashes make a good lawn fertilizer applied to the back lawn?

The following bulletin explains under what circumstances applying wood ashes can benefit lawns and gardens. However, the ashes will not add nitrogen to the soil.
