Understory shade plants

Asked March 31, 2019, 10:34 AM EDT

I’m just recently pruned a lot of dead wood off my Cypress and now I have a nice understory that I’d like to plant some Maryland natives. What would grow underneath the cypress that are llow maintenance but give some texture and color to that space? I’m thinking some small shrubs or perennials would be nice. Any recommendations? Thank you.

Start by taking a look at the recommended native plants (and related resources) on our website. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/native-plants

You also can use the Chesapeake Native Plant Finder to search for options that would be suitable in sun/part sun and your soil conditions.
http://www.nativeplantcenter.net/ (Search "Piedmont" region for plants that are adapted to your area.)

New England aster, New Jersey tea, false indigo, butterfly weed, switchgrass, bee balm, and black-eyed susans would be some good choices to start with but do take the time to research them and their growing conditions.

For sourcing native plants, I recommend looking at the Maryland Native Plant Society's lists of sources and plant sales.
