Shrubs for Full Shade

Asked March 27, 2019, 3:28 PM EDT

I have a spot next to my house that is in full shade. What shrubs and ground cover would you recommend? Thank you.

For groundcovers in full shade, some options are Alleghany pachysandra, Christmas fern, and wild ginger. See the information in this article on groundcovers: https://marylandgrows.umd.edu/2018/05/23/qa-try-these-groundcovers-that-will-keep-deer-away/

Other options are listed here on our website:

For shrubs, some full-shade options include Leucothoe, buttonbush, spicebush, and winterberry holly. However, you did not mention whether you have moist or dry soil conditions. I encourage you to research these plants to learn about their ideal growing conditions. The Chesapeake Bay Native Plant database is a great resource for searching/learning about plants that would be suitable for your site.
