Pruning Euonymus

Asked March 12, 2019, 11:40 AM EDT

I allowed wintercreeper to cover a chain-link fence over a decade ago. I'd like to drastically prune it's width this year. When is the best time to prune? I live in Catonsville 21228. Thanks.

Euonymus can be pruned before spring growth. So, now would be a good time to prune to reduce the width of the shrub. They also can be sheared at mid-season, if desired.

Please be aware that this shrub is now invasive in wild areas of Maryland and it is regulated by the Maryland Department of Agriculture as a Tier 1 invasive plant. You can find information about this on our website. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/winter-creeper-euonymus If you don't want to consider a replacement plant, at least cut back the spent flowers to help reduce its spread. https://extension.umd.edu/hgic/topics/introduction-invasive-plants
