Removing Leaves

Asked March 9, 2019, 2:37 PM EST

We have a rain garden Howard County helped us with. It gets lots of leaves in the fall. Should we remove them in the fall or next spring or not at all?

Rain garden maintenance is generally no different than that required of other landscaped areas. Decomposing leaves will provide nutrients for your plants as well as niches for overwintering wildlife. If there is an excessive amount of leaf buildup clogging the inlet/outlet to your rain garden, then remove the leaves (at any time) to allow for correct flow and drainage.
