Zoysia lawn

Asked March 5, 2019, 1:17 PM EST

I think I have zoysia grass. This is my second year in this house and starting in late October thru April it turns all yellow. In the summer it looks great, very dense and not many weeds. Should I seed over it with Kentucky bluegrass seed, if so will it get thru the dense zoysia and when should I seed it (metro Detroit area). Thanks for any suggestions. Susan

Zoysiagrass isn’t recommended here for that reason. To over seed you will probably have to go through several steps so the seed will germinate. First cut the grass short as your mower can. Next core aerate the lawn. Top dress with 1/4 inch of compost. Then over seed the area and care for as usual, lightly watering 2-3 times per day, as needed. Here is an article on how to over seed- https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/tips_for_reseeding_lawns_in_the_spring

And this article has more detail, if you need it-

And alternative way would be to smother the lawn or use a herbicide on it, like glyphosate, to kill it off. Then start over with the seeding process. If this sounds like a big job, you could proceed in sections. The best time for starting a lawn from seed is in late summer or early fall, just after the very hot weather has subsided. The issue with starting a lawn in the spring is that you’re going into the heat of summer and you will have to be careful to keep the lawn watered during that time.

Here is an article that discusses zoysia in Michigan.
