Holding food in a thermos

Asked February 13, 2019, 1:14 PM EST

How long is hot food safe in a thermos. If I send something hot in the morning with my child's for lunch, is it still okay if it gets eaten after school. It would be hot for more than 4 hours.

Hi,
Only the thermos company can tell you how long their product will keep something hot. Each company tends to vary in the length of time something is kept hot.
We generally use a two hour rule for allowing something in the temperature danger zone of 41 degrees Fahrenheit to 135 degrees Fahrenheit. After the two hours in the temperature danger zone, we consider the food product to have enough bacterial growth and toxins to cause a food borne illness.
Sincerely,
