Who is inside this cocoon?

Asked February 10, 2019, 12:56 PM EST

I found this cocoon in my silver maple tree this winter and was wondering if you could provide some insight into what may be inside it. We are in SE Gaines Township and these photos were taken on Feb. 10, 2019. Thank you for any help you an give. Brian Rushlow MSU CVM 1993 Go Green!

I'm guessing that is the cocoon of one of our native silk moths (Saturniidae). I can't tell which one from the cocoon.

Best regards,

Could this be the caterpillar that created the cocoon? I had found this in a crabapple tree in July 2018 and then put it near the tree that this cocoon was found it. Do you know the type of moth this caterpillar is?

Thanks again,

Hi Brian,

You are definitely in the ball park. That is a Cecropia moth caterpillar, Hyalophora cecropia (Saturniidae). See https://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Hyalophora-cecropia
