Do Deer Jump Picket Fences?

Asked February 6, 2019, 8:50 PM EST

I have been told a few times that deer will not jump picket fences. The spacing between the pickets interferes with their sight perception beyond the fence. Is there any data on this?

Deer are capable of jumping fences that are as high as 8 feet (or more), so yes, they can get over a picket fence easily. Deer like to see where they will land. They are less likely to jump over a fence into a garden that has raised beds or those that have row covers or support structures such as tomato cages. You can find more information on deer deterrent options in the following University of Maryland publication.
