Rust and Fruit Trees

Asked February 5, 2019, 10:31 AM EST

I would like to plant a mugo pine and a fir tree called Picea glauca 'Pendula' in my yard. The problem is I have apple trees and I'm afraid they might get cedar apple rust. I know better than to plant cedars, but will pines or firs carry the rust and infect my apple trees?

You are fine with those selections as far as Gymnosporangium rust diseases like Cedar-Apple Rust. While there are other alternate hosts besides apples, the evergreen species affected is Juniperus or Junipers.
It can be confusing because the native evergreen that we call 'Eastern Red Cedar' is actually Juniperus virginiana.
