can blackberries and black raspberries be planted close together in the same yard without disease causing a problem. I also grow currants and grapes. Thank You. Nick Scramlin

Generally we do not recommend it. Both blackberries and black raspberries get orange rust so they can cross infect each other. This is not a problem with red and black raspberries. I doubt you would be happy with blackberries where you are located. Most commercial blackberry varieties cannot handle the winter cold in Michigan and they are planted very close to the Lake Michigan shore in the 3 southwestern counties and these planting often suffer winter injury
