How long to allow broccoli to mature before picking

Asked January 31, 2019, 6:03 PM EST

I have attached a picture of broccoli that was planted in October from starts. The largest crown is about 4 by 5 inches. There are a couple of others that are about 3 by 4 inches and a few smaller ones. Should I let them go hoping they will get bigger? I've never grown broccoli before so I don't know what to expect. Thanks.

Broccoli heads should be harvested when the heads are tight and dense - like yours are now, before the flowers open. Yours look perfect. Broccoli is a cool weather vegetable. Small heads should continue to develop as spring goes on. Often you get a single large head as the first crop on broccoli. Smaller heads then develop around the plant.

Your plants look very healthy. Congratulations on getting a crop this early!
