Forced bulbs in water yellow leaves

Asked January 28, 2019, 6:56 AM EST

I am trying my hand at forcing tulip bulbs in water. They grew well until they started to bloom. Now the leaves are turning yellow. I purchased a grow light because we haven’t had very many sunny days. But I am not sure if it is a lack of sun or nutrients. I have only been giving them plan water no fertilizer. I wasn’t sure if I should.

Thanks for your question. They need fertilizer! The leaves can’t photosynthesize without a balanced (10-10-10) water soluble fertilizer used per package directions. Otherwise, they won’t bloom, can’t restore sugar to the bulb, and will soon die. Good luck!
