4H Sheep and wool

Asked January 25, 2019, 11:30 AM EST

Hi! I recently learned that the kids who participate in raising lambs for 4H don't re-cycle the wool after shearing their sheep and that in fact, they throw it out! Are there any programs that could use the wool for use in building insulation or padding for mattresses? Or something other than a landfill?! That would be a good study for the kids in 4H to investigate the further uses of wool if it isn't suitable for the garment industry.

Thank you for your suggestion. Some youth do use their wool for spinning, some sell the wool; typically, it's the youth with a single lamb or two that don't take the time to utilize the wool in some manner. Perhaps we can put together a co-op of sorts that will allow all those members to put their wool together for a specific purpose - I'm not versed enough in the industry to answer intelligently what that might be, but we'll do some research and see if something might make sense. Thanks again for reaching out.
