Overwintering Geraniums

Asked January 21, 2019, 11:21 PM EST

I am overwintering two geraniums. They are in a cool room with a western view and doing very well. They look quite leggy. Can I prune them back a bit right now, or do I have to wait until Spring? How much can they be cut back to grow back to nice hanging basket plants?

It would probably be better to wait a little longer to cut them back. The days are still pretty short and the new growth will probably stretch yet. I would say wait until the middle or end of March. You can cut them back about a third to half of the stem length. Eventually old geraniums get too leggy to look good and you are better off starting new ones but you can keep old plants for a few years.
