Angus heifer finishing

Asked January 14, 2019, 9:36 AM EST

I am considering getting a pair of feeder angus heifers, they were born in March of 2018 and now weigh roughly 600-640, I just sent on a pair of steers that finished at 1575. I’m wondering how far behind these heifers will finish out at compared to steers?

Heifers will gain roughly 15% lower than steers or 1/2 lb per day less. Heifers typically will be fatter at harvest and it takes more energy to deposit fat than muscle. I have attached a link of a study comparing the two. http://www.iowabeefcenter.org/bch/ProfitabilityDifferencesSteersHeifers.pdf

Thanks a lot, that is quite helpful!
