ranking systems or lists for botanical gardens and/or academic institutions in horticulture

Asked January 10, 2019, 1:31 PM EST

Hello. Are there reliable ranking systems or lists from reputable organizations for botanical gardens and/or academic institutions in horticulture? DETAILS: I trust government sites and major reputable universities. Now I am wondering about the reputation of the Missouri Botanical Garden at www.missouribotanicalgarden.org. Although I have found written content on this site to be quite helpful, the pronunciations of species names differ from what another site lists. I am knew to the field. Thank you.

There is not one definitive pronunciation of botanical names. Here is an excellent article explaining why: http://www.calflora.net/botanicalnames/pronunciation.html

Most names are pronounced similarly in the U.S., but don't be put off by one different from what you have been taught. And keep in mind that beginning gardeners all make some classic booboos (like 'cotton easter' for cotoneaster.) Listen and ask is always good advice. Other sciences change pronunciations, too.

Keeps us gardeners humble.

Lastly, we aren't familiar with any ranking such as you described.
