winter watering in boulder county, longmont area

Asked January 9, 2019, 12:32 PM EST

Does the soil temperature also need to be 40F, for the water to penetrate deeper into the soil. Right now air is above 40 degrees F, but soil is frozen.

Hello. Thank you for your question. It is particularly important to water trees once a month during the winter when we receive less than 1" or rain or 12" of snow. It should be done earlier in the day when the air temperature is 45 degrees or higher. Because the soil may be frozen, it is best to allow the water to drip slowly from a hose. Most of the roots are in the top 18" of the soil so the water will be able to reach them. Great question!
